Have a Myford ML8 woodturning lathe, recently replaced the drive belt with a new one.
Put it into reverse and the belt broke into several pieces.
The belt was from a myford supplier it was also the correct length.
Can anybody tell me why this happened
Thanks in anticipation

At the risk of seeming condescending...you didn't engage the indexing device did you? That would lock the spindle/chuck?

Sam

Sounds like you tried to reverse a linked belt as intimated above by phil.p. All the ones I have had experience with were designed to engage and lock in one direction only.

I am a novice, so maybe I am missing something, but why do you want to run backwards,
Martin
Because on some tasks, dependant upon your preferred methods of working it is easier to access the work or see what you are doing.

Thanks for reply, and pic, but how do you stop the chuck/face plate unscrewing.
martin
You fit the chuck collar with a locking screw.

See the small hole on this chuck for instance.
