Decided to start posting some pics of my efforts, now that I have got a bit of confidence and learned how to...
Finished this today, I don't know what the timber is but think it might be a maple (any thoughts?). I planed the piece, then bored it and turned a taper before wedging it in the Cole jaws to pattern the front. Finished with oil and wax. It stands 280mm high and 80x60mm at the base. Now to find a decent shade as I nicked this from another one.
All feedback and suggestions gratefully received

I really like that, bold and yet not overstated decoration, good on you for thinking outside the usual beaded and coved spindle stem.
 
Well done on a great looking piece. For the time you have been turning to come up with a design like this is great and I look forward to what you can produce in a year or two
