Or the one from Robert Sorby which I have found very useful

I've turned an Oak piece that slips over my live centre and has a concave face. You could (and I intend to) turn any profile you like.

I really want one for long hole boring so needs to be hollow. The Sorby one would do but is expensive.

I agree I know mine was but have not looked back as you can make wooden bits to suit different jobs and using the cup insert use it to support things like goblets and the like.

I have even turned from plastic a insert and use it as a mandril saver when turning pens.

Have you done it before? They're handy but not necessary. If a cup centre burns a little just trim it off. Sorry, if you knew this. I put the hole through as soon as the blank is something like round, whack the nipple in while there's some bulk of timber there so it doesn't split, then use a live centre in the brass nipple. If a little wood needs to be removed, just tap the nipple in a bit deeper.

It's a possibility Paul, I'll have to see one close up to see if it's suitable.

The one Paul linked to is the replacement for the original Axi version I have which which is identical to the Carbatech one you linked to originally.

I would expect that the cross-holes will be quite an improvement for clearing the waste. In theory at least I expect that the auger only needs withdrawing to the holes rather than right out of tailstock after each peck.
