I have mentioned before my "vise on a stick"

http://web.archive.org/web/200901140249 ... vise_stick

I often use it when shaping tool handles, but since these are often irregular, I have to tighten the vise quite firmly to get a grip. Inspired by the Emmert Tilting Jaw, I turned some ash from my firewood pile into a "boat" (also useful when fitting doors!).

I show it here holding a small hatchet handle.

The solution to fixing an item that needs to stay in place, but move in various complex ways is a loop of string around the rails of the vise.

Just to be clear, I'm not claiming I invented this, I'm just promoting it.

It has a really good fabrication effort to benefit ratio. :D

EDIT;
having used it for an hour this morning, working on a irregular (natural) walking stick, I have discovered an unexpected and pleasing benefit.

Since the taper holds the stick so effectively, I don't need to tighten the vise as much. In practice, this means that moving the item to a new position (which is frequent) is both quicker and easier.

Wow that's a kool looking vice, I imagine there's also no racking issues either.

Does the centre pivot rise to act as a dog by any chance?
What's on the end of the chain, please don't tell me a anti racking wedge :roll:
