I need to move the hinges on a badly fitting front door out a little, say 2mm. This presents an obvious problem, since the holes will overlap. Is there a good way of doing this, apart from filling the existing holes with something? If not, what should I fill them with?

Thanks for all those suggestions. I will probably enlarge the holes and use dowels. Plugs would be better, but using longer screws than originally would perhaps make up for the grain orientation weakness. Matchsticks seems a very easy method, but I would need persuading (not being an expert) that it would be completely satisfactory.

I have done a few renovations in old houses and it's surprising how many matchsticks and fag packets were used for packing when you take the doors off :)
