I have a big set of Famag forstner bits which i bought after seeing them recommended here. They would have no problem cutting through that.
They have a wavy outer edge which helps a lot.
 
Bit late to this thread, but here's my input.

I have two sets of forstners

My main set is the £30ish set from screwfix, I think they're generic but they're saw tooth and generally good for all types of work.

I have a set of festool zobo bits but I only use them in low resin hardwoods, they're excellent!

If you're looking for a new set I would recommend the screwfix ones.
