Finish for Chipboard Workbench Top

I recently covered my existing MDF workbench top with a layer of 18mm chipboard and I want to protect it from glue drips and spilt tea :roll: so...

What's the best finish for a chipboard workbench top? It's got to be cheap and water-resistant.

oil based pu varnish I would suggest. Thin the first coat down to get it to soak in.
