In the old days a cooker would last one or two generations.

Our last oven was a NEF built in. The fan element lasted a decade. The oven lasted 20+ until a few years back I just replaced it with the latest of the same thing. From the dissection of the old one, yes, they are all more complicated than you would expect.

You do, but they're online PDF files.

Just as well, as the one for my Auris is 640 pages and the SatNav / Entertainment Centre is 292

It’s probably quicker to use Google than wade through a badly translated and poorly indexed manual.
