Bit of a daft one, this - Elbow Grease, a solvent-free all purpose degreaser.
Use on Fabrics, metals, plastics....but in the small print, "not suitable for wood".

Well, I used it on a painted wooden window cill, and have to say that it worked brilliantly, even lifting the nicotine/tar/smoke clean off. Has anyone accidently used it on bare or varnished stuff, and if so, what was the result?! I normally use Colman's fuel to get rid of nasty stuff, but it's got a bit pricey. Perhaps Elbow Grease might be a cheaper alternative?
