Don't swear very often but just sent a private message to a member on here. Who like myself is over 18 and I just mentioned I'd had a few pretty *the long s word (naff) tty * weeks.

* it changed it to read Cumquats.

I understand the need for censorship on an open forum but a private message ?

Other than censoring F's and C's (maybe), I see little reason to censor at all. How many children go on forums like this? Even if they do, my 13y.o. hears more foul language in an hour at school than I hear in a month - it would be hardly likely to shock them.

You'll probably find that the system can't distinguish the difference between a PM and a post as effectively (technically) they are the same thing, a PM is just a post that only the user you sent it to can see.

I run a forum (very different subject) and we replace any swearing with a Censored icon.

I'm pretty sure ours does the same with PM's. As a forum admin you can have some fun with the censor settings as you can swap single words for whole sentences. The forum I look after is for Landrover Discovery 3 & 4 owners (hence my username here) I once set our censor to change the word caravan to (massive flimsy box being towed at 20mph clogging up the roads) or something along those lines. It caused some fun.

In all seriousness I can see the need as you never know who is reading forums and generally I think people can use other words to get their meaning across.

I remember taking my 12 year old daughter to a premier league football match (a few years ago now). I told her she would just have to ignore the bad language after a particularly "colourful" outburst from a man sat just behind us. Her reply? "Dad, I hear worse than that every day in the school playground!".

Alas I suspect that is true, I have to say I don't do football but I will happily take all of my children to the Rugby.

As for those being my legs in the photo, I confess i do like to wear high heels and go clubbing on a Sat night - you've found me out!

There's posh for you

From the owner of an elderly Disco 2. Mind you, when things go wrong I do believe that yours costs ever so slightly much much more

Phil.

It might not shock younger people but this is one of the reasons that today some of them feel it's okay to use filthy language, any old where; any old time.

I served 12 years in the RN, and 30 as a Police Officer, so you might say I am used to foul language. (Although, why should I be?) However, at risk of being considered chauvinistic about this, I'll just say the F and C words are still the only two words, which, if used in a public place, can get you arrested.

As for censorship on UKW, I am glad of it. I wouldn't like to think my Grand-kids came onto this forum; knowing I frequent, and then see it littered with obscenities. 'S***ty' being one of them. Like a lot of things, between consenting adults and in the right place, it's personal choice.

I like to think the users of this forum, in general, are well enough educated, and not so lazy, as to need this language regularly.

Okay, if I hit the wrong nail with a claw-hammer, in my shop... But that stays in the shop. 8)

I think you might be surprised! Parts are actually pretty reasonable. As with all cars main dealer charges are very high but good independents are in my opinion better and cheaper.

It also helps being in a club as you find out where to go for what.

I've actually developed a love of doing mechanical work on the car myself. I don't touch any of our other cars as they hold no interest for me but I love working on the Land Rover. In fact I love the Land Rover full stop. It's part of our family and I will never sell it. I bought it when it was a couple of years old with the intention of keeping it for 2-3 as I do with all my cars. However it's now 10 years old worth about £2000 less than I paid for it (irrelevant to me as I'm not selling) and we love it.

It does everything:

Comfortable motorway cruising
Enough performance on the road
Amazing off-road
Takes 7 adults (not just two little kids seats in the back)
Converts to a transit van when I fill it with wood etc
Take 5 people and expedition kit in complete comfort for 1000's miles.

It does it all and it does it well.

You can probably tell I'm a bit passionate about it!

Stu..

Unless you own a farm, or your local council have let the roads go to rack and ruin, who wants to drive off-road to begin with?

I'd do! Love it. Both public byways and also the odd pay and play site. I love trundling along and seeing the countryside etc. I also love the challenge that you get at pay and play sites. The two things are very different and often people confuse the two. As for the local roads, some of them are indeed dire and are best driven on air suspension!

Disco Stu, have you considered taking up fishing, your rising to the bait nicely :)

Envy is such a terrible sin, just because you can go where no man has needed to go before........

Back to the thread, I agree with censorship, there are so many more elegant and funny ways of making a point. Must be me, but how can F&C's get you arrested. Where I come from its code for a fish and chip supper! Luxury!

Very happy to discuss my off roading. I'm very used to forums and baiting. Actually when it's not malicious it can be beneficial for the forum. However this is off topic.

Hi Deema,

The answer to your question:

Those two words are legally defined as indecent. It is an offence to use indecent language in a public place, and the Police have a power of arrest for the offence. So using those two words, in a public place, can get you arrested.

Hope that helps Deema.

I know a great joke about those two words, and breakfast cereals, but this isn't the place to tell it!

Cheers

Wow, I hadn't appreciate the significance. Thanks Benchwayze

Seriously, are there any other words that can lead to a free stay in the metal hotel that are usually uttered at times of high stress?

It's great knowing that if you need to pull off, say, a country road then you simply drive up onto the verge, whatever with impunity when 'lesser cars' will ground out :D

Well yes Deema. There's always a means of locking up the 'norty' people. Ordinary cussing would get you a warning. Not heeding the warning would probably constitute a breach of the peace, and these days you'd get an ASBO. (Woodworkers have been given ASBOs because neighbours didden like the noise of the machinery!)

Roger...

I'm waiting for throwaway chisels and irons to come on the market, to save the hassle!
