Hello,

I am new to Woodworking and new to this forum so any info would be gratefully received.

I have recently bought a second hand CEMA K156 but has no stand, no chuck/collet/block for the moulder, Excuse my lack of knowledge but how does a cutter block fit on to the spindle, having never seen one before it's dificult to tell from photographs. And I can't seem to find anywhere that can supply new planer knives.

Could be looking for a better machine, has anyone got preferences or recommendations?

Have been looking at the Fox machining centre (combi) looks ok to me, decent price too, anyone have any thoughts on this machine or the Kity Bestcombi 2000 Combination Machine, a bit more pricey but looks like a good bit of kit.

Regards.........Martin

Hi Martin & welcome to the forum

I can't help much with the Cema or Fox machines but if you can post the length and thickness of the knives then I may be able to point you in the right direction.

I have been using the Kity for about 8 years (earlier 200mm wide planer) and find it quite capable with a small footprint and decent size capability with the sliding carrage and table extension. Have a look through my albums to see what can be done on one.

Hi Martin, welcome to the forum.

I cannot help you with the info you need but I am sure someone will be along soon who can.

Am I right in thinking that your Motown relates to the music you like? If so I'm with you all the way.

Cheers

Mike

A bit of googling seems to reveal that the spindle is 20mm dia and the block has to be quite small, not sure of any UK suppliers but I think it was also branded as Tekna or similar and sold through Machine Mart & Rutlandswhen Kity was not available.

Hi Jason

Nice photo's, maybe in a few years I shall be able to make a cabinet just half as good as that.

The planer Knives are 150mm long x 25mm high x 3mm thick, they may have been 30mm high at one time before being sharpened, there are also 3 vertical fixing slots at 65mm centres.

Thanks........Martin

Hi Mike

The handle does refer to the music, love the Northern Soul & Motown from the Sixties.

Can only listen these days as the body is wearing, hence a novice in Woodwork.

Regards..........Martin

Hi Martin,

Yeah I love northern soul too. I used to go to the old Twisted Wheel in Manchester and the Torch in Stoke, and then we have the home of northern soul "Wigan Casino". Those were the days, talk about all nighters, how I got to work on Monday morning I will never know.

Cheers

the CEMA machines were supplied by NMA is it the small machine 6" planer I may have a small block for the spindle moulder knocking about. If its the larger one 10" planer on it. The NMA may still have spares

Pretty certain I have a block somewhere I shall check tomorrow and let you know
Thanks Russell, all I need now is somewhere who sells the Planer Knives.

Many thanks to everyone that has replied & helped me out so far.

Spec for the knives seems to be 150x25x2.9, the same company that does the blocks lists them at the bottom of the page.

Jason

If that's the case any half-decent saw doctor service should be able to supply replacements.

That's great Jason, just a bit of a challenge as it's all in Italian, wish me luck

Thanks again

I think you have the wrong Birstall! Russell is at Birstall in West Yorkshire (near Cleckheaton or between Huddersfield and Leeds), not Leicester.......

Despite having some outlaws, sorry inlaws, from Leicester I don't know the local sharpeners, but I'd recommend looking up the local members of the Saw Doctors Association (who before anyone says it are not a fan group for an Irish pop band) or looking for Saw Doctor Services in Yellow Pages. failing that give the lads at Timber Team at Earl Shilton a bell - they are ex-Wadkin and know what they're talking about (do really good rebuilds, too)
