Hi, I am interested to find out what would be the best way to get a glossy black finish on wood. I want to create a pietra dura effect. I can not find any strips of ebony that is a quarter of on inch thick or I wold use that. Any suggestions appreciated.

I did some by dying the timber black then using the same black dye in some shellac button polish. There are numerous other ways, no doubt but that one worked for me.

How long do the strips need to be? if it's for only short stuff, there's a guy on Ebay sells nice Bog Oak pen blanks, you can't get blacker and shinier finishing wood than that.

I have a few spare, so if you wanted only a little, pm me and I'll see about sorting you out :)

Maybe use african blackwood ? (Dalbergia melanoxylon) it is available from Stiles and bates.
