I'm soundproofing a small part of my girlfriend's living room (after her parents complained to the neighbours about their TV about a million times and you can still hear every word) but have run into a little problem... an electrical problem.

This is seriously not my area of interest although I know most of the very basic stuff. The area I'm soundproofing is the area between the chimney breast and the wall and my girlfriend's mum wants to be triply sure that you won't hear a peep, so I'm basically building a new wall about 2" away from the existing wall, putting soundboard as the new wall and filling the cavity with a little fibreglass insulation.

Now to the problem... there's a plug socket on the existing wall. I rang the electrician and he told me to; first turn the electrics off, unscrew the plug and finally fit connector blocks until he could get down and finish the job properly in about a week or so.

I've already built the frame and screwed it to the existing wall but I can't do anything else until the plug socket's sorted out so is it worth maybe getting a different electrician to come out and do the whole job (all that really needs doing once the plug's out is the soundboard putting up and then the plug can be re-fitted) or is it really not that hard?

Also if I do end up doing it myself is there anyone here who could guide me just until the point when I'd need a pro

Thanks for any help

Anthony

Hi Anthony.

The simplest (and safest) is to ring a sparks out of your local paper. A one-man-band (as I used to be) shouldn't mind spreading the job between 2 visits. 1st to link-out the socket in a safe manner and possibly extend the cables and 2nd to fit a new socket. If the chap is local then a total cost of about £50-60 would be reasonable. This was the type of job I liked... No receipts, In & out in minutes, Beer money!!

If you are not comfortable with electrics DEFINATELY don't do it yourself.

HTH.

Thanks so much for the reply, I've been fretting about this since I realised the socket was there!

I'll see if anyone I know recommends someone, I think my friend knows a couple of electricians so I might be able to get it done even cheaper :p

Thanks again

Anthony
