Do you not have the quick clamp? I never use anything else than the quick clamp I find it indispensable. :)

Without knowing about the project it's difficult to say but have you considered using different coloured woods? For example a light wood...

Cutting along the grain is always a problem more so in softwood whether than using a scrollsaw or a band saw the only way to avoid...
