Barley Twists

Has anyone ever turned "barley twists"? I have a clock at home that my Dad made some years ago. It sits on two ebony barley twist legs and it bugs me that I dont know how he did it. I know he mentioned something about "doing it by hand" but I cant imagine how?

Much better explanation than anything else I managed to find on my own I guess I'm just terminally lazy :roll:

Thanks again, I'll give it a go when I get time as I have a skeleton clock mechanism which I would like to mount on barley twist legs. I'll let you all know how I get on.
