"Talking Tools....with Axminster

Axminster Tool Centre and Rycotewood Furniture Centre will be hosting "Talking Tools" on 13-14 February 2010. The event, which will be held at Rycotewood in Oxford (part of Oxford & Cherwell Valley College), will be focusing on the quality range of Lie-Nielsen hand tools. Distinguished hand tool specialists including Tom Lie-Nielsen and Deneb Puchalski will be displaying their skills, together with other well known names in the hand tool world to be confirmed at a later date. Visitors will have the opportunity to see first class demonstrations, handle these beautiful tools and put any questions to the experts. At the same time, Rycotewood will also putting on a series of lectures for those interested in subjects such as the history of the college and courses it can now offer, plus an exhibition of the students’ work. For more information visit www.axminster.co.uk/rycote

I will keep you informed as to what else is going on there I think Tormek and Festool will be going as well should be nice and we have invited a number of guys to also talk tools

Robert ingham

David Charlesworth

John Lloyd

Jason Breech

And two of our own specialists

The first three have been sent invites and to be confirmed Nick Gibbs from British Woodworking is going to be there

There will be 45 minute lectures also going on with some nationally known guest speakers. The main feature of the event is to talk tools and wander up to one of the many benches there and try out the tools as well as talking to the experts etc.

Rycote will be having an exhibition of Students work and a walk around the college which I found really interesting especially young men consumed with a desire to make good work.

Deneb is a long term worker at LN and is over for a week before the event so I wondered if you wanted to set up an evening maybe with fellow forum members limited to say 15 or 20 where we can come to a workshop or you come to us for a unique evening trying out tools and having much of them explained as well as demonstrated? I have to get a schedule up together over the next few days so would be pleased if you can let me know asap if its of interest and also which night-late afternoon also location.

We will be having some in-store demonstration days so geographically these may suit those not so well located or busy on the Friday-Saturday.

Hope it may be of interest we have a lot of work to do placing quality tools in to the hands of the many so that they can really appreciate what good is!"

With apologies to Nick Gibbs for stealing his thunder, but I received this email from Ian Styles at Axminster regarding what would appear to be an excellent event at Rycotewood College next year (mods...maybe this could be included on the Diary of Events, Shows etc)

What's really interesting is that UKW members have been invited by Axminster to set up a 'stall' one evening. I need to know if this is a 'runner' and if any members would be willing to participate. I need to get back to Ian fairly promptly within the next few days, so PM me if you're a 'definite' or even a 'possibly'
This will involve a fair bit of organisation if it's to work, so fire away with questions, but remember it's only in the early planning stages so I don't know too much at present... - Rob

Sounds like an excellent event.

Cheers

Paul

PS I'd also be particularly interested in the Evening with Deneb if that were to go ahead. A very experienced bloke with lots of tips to pass on.

The possibility of a 'stall' at an event has come up before. I don't see what there is to gain from it? What would we do? and why would we be doing it?

The event sounds interesting, tho a shame it's LN themed. Probably a bit far for me.

Sounds very interesting indeed! I would certainly try to be there.
V - behind the 'stall' or as a visitor?

What I need to tell Ian at this stage is if the idea of a UKWorkshop stall/table is feasible and the number of members willing to man it over the course of the event, however long that will be - Rob

Rob I think we need to establish the point of the stall and what it will involve. What does Charley say about this? The only benefit that I can see of a stall would be increased membership. You might want to check that Charley has the capacity to have an influx of new members and if he can balance the increased bandwidth against the potential increased advertising clicks.

If it's just for social reasons, then do we need to 'man' anything? Can't we just have a get together, as usual.

I'd be interested in attending both the event and an evening presentation with Deneb.

Other than general awareness, I am not sure what purpose a stall would serve. I certainly enjoy meeting other UKWS members and I am sure that would happen anyway. Perhaps better to suggest 'sponsoring' a bench at one of the sessions jointly with one of the site's key advertisers (we get increased visibility which helps them through more click-throughs)?

S

PS - I could not get Rob's link to work - may be our IT Police so will try again at home.

Seems a generous offer of the evening with Deneb, but unless I'm missing something I don't see any offer of a stall at the event.

As I said, the planning for this (if it's to happen at all) has only just started, but I see it as a way of selling the forum to other interested woodworkers who may not know of it's existence.

Ian did say..." I wondered if you wanted to set up an evening maybe with fellow forum members limited to say 15 or 20 where we can come to a workshop or you come to us for a unique evening trying out tools and having much of them explained"...so it's a two way process where, for example, forum members could show some of their work, give demonstrations and talk about the particular tools and materials they use, Philly could be there with his planes etc etc. It's a two way process where UKWorkshop members on the bench or stall could then go off for a wander in much the same way as is done at an event like West Dean. In fact if you could think of it as a sort of West Dean type of event with a UKW area, that's how I envisage it at the moment - Rob

Jake - you might be correct...I'll have to email Ian to clarify but I interpreted the text in red as the offer to set up a 'workshop' at the event

Edit - OK...I've emailed Ian for clarification - Rob

I've heard from Ian and what he's referring to is a:

..."I was suggesting a special evening event somewhere" for UKWorkshop members, date, location and timings to be confirmed.
We are all of course welcome to attend the event at Rycotewood which I still reckon will be very good, but of course, no UKWorkshop 'stand'

I seem to have jumped the gun somewhat, so apologies for any confusion

Now I know that Ian is referring to a 'special event' somewhere, are forum member still interested? - Rob

I would certainly be interested in this event, particularly as I have not bothered with any of the other shows this year (even Westonbirt which I consider to be the best show that I can easily get to), I would be happy to visit over two day’s/evenings as I am little over an hour from Oxford.

Mike

Well I'm up for it. I'll stick my hand up for MarkW too, provisionally.

Yes, I'd be interested. This is the evening with Deneb Puchalski referred to in the original post. Deneb is excellent at demonstrating hand-tool techniques and I think it could be a very interesting evening.

Cheers

Paul

I'm not remotely competent enough to warrent a place behind a stall extolling the virtues of woodworking! :)
I would however love to attend the event, I'll have to work out the practicalities of the evening event too!
