Anyone here got any experience of applying Patina over either an oil or spirit based stain?

I have some Beech stools that need to be stained to match a dark Oak kitchen.

Given that they are going to be in a kitchen environment, I would like to use Patina to protect them, as I have had very good results with it in the past.

However, I have only ever applied it to bare wood, never on top of a stain.

Anyone else tried this? Do you reckon an oil based stain or a spirit based one would be better?

Thanks.

Gary

Hi Taffy

I've never used Patina over a stain either, but I can't imagine it being a problem.

Have you tried it out on a scrap piece?

I'd feel reasonably confident putting it over any based stain.

Hi Aragorn,

I haven't tried it out on scrap piece for the simple reason that I ddn't actually have the stain yet.

My question was mainly so that I would know which kind of stain to go for - spirit or oil based.

I think I will go ahead and order some Chestnut spirit based stain and try it out as you suggest.

If it doesn't work, I can always revert back to using Danish Oil instead.

Regards.

Gary,

I tried Patina over spirit stain once and it 'diluted' it leaving a patchy job. Maybe water-based stain would be better?

Gary, I've used Patina on oak over a Colron medium oak spirit stain see below.

No sign of patchiness
