Just been watching Antiques Roadshow and they were showing a 16th Century Onion Wine Bottle.
I think they would look fantastic turned in wood.

Now the Question ? has anyone any ideas of the dimensions of one of these I have looked on the internet and not found a lot.

Cheers

Vic

Never heard of one to be honest. Might have a look on iPlayer tomorrow during lunch at work.
We were watching a programme this evening where a couple had a washing stick for the old fashioned copper, which they were using as a bog roll holder.

The onion form seems to be a popular shape for vases and ornaments at the moment, often seen for sale in Debenhams, for example. They look nice with elongated necks, I think. I suppose you could make one in any size and proportions that you fancied. You could hollow it from the base and then insert a plug.

I was about to ask how you would hollow it :)

To be honest I don't know whether I would hollow it as it's the actual shape that pleases me. To make it look a little more authentic you could drill the neck out.

Easiest way to hollow it is to make the basic outside shape, cut a piece from the base and hollow through the bottom. When done glue back in place keeping the grain as matching as possible then hollow down through the neck and finish the outside. An alternative way if you are going to ebonise it is to make the base and the neck seperately. Better if you have a demarcation between the two though that way so that the join isn't as obvious.

Hope this helps

Vic I think the following sizes may work The neck 2/3 of the diameter of the main body which is a sphere with it's bum cut off. I made a rough sketch and it seems ok so try a few sketches with these proportions. Please let us know what is the outcome.

I to should have gone to the shed on Saturday. We won to day versus NZ

Cheers Roger I will give it a try.

I watch a lot of cricket and really enjoy T 20. Your lads done well today particularly Dale Steyn in the final over.
I thought he would have got man of the match but there again Dumminy played a sound innings.

I don't fancy our chances in the group mind you with a bit of luck we might pull of a win against the Netherlands

Hi

Do you have any form of CAD - if so you should be able to import an image of an onion bottle into CAD and trace around it - copy the tracing away from the bottle image and modify it to suit your 'eye'. Once happy, scale the image.

Hi Mick,
Not sure, I did buy some design soft ware ages ago from a company I think was called Creative Woodturning I didn't get on too well with it as I am not that computer savy. I will have to dig it out I am sure it lets you do things like you mention. Thanks for the prompt I forgot all about that soft ware.

Cheers

Yes it is possible in sketch up this is a very quick sketch just to show it can be done. If I spend a bit more time I could replicate the onion wine bottle shape. And yes the drawing is hollow as a bottle would be

Hi Vic

Sketch Up has a huge following, (but not by me), perhaps a user could advise if this is possible in SU.

Regards Mick

Certainly Possible - I've seldom been beaten by an object that can't be drawn in SU.

This is half an hours work showing a cut-away.

Or, take a sheet of paper, a soft pencil and a rubber.
Draw the desired shape, erasing and redrawing as necessary until you get the shape you like.
If you find it hard to make it symmetrical, fold the paper in half lengthwise and draw half of the bottle with the fold as your centre line.
Then fold the paper the other way and trace over your half bottle to transfer it to the other half of the paper.
You can cut out the shape and stick the piece which is left onto card, as a template, to check the progress of your turning, if you want your turned bottle to be as close as possible to your sketch.
Much easier to do than to explain in writing!)
