My son came across this in Thailand today and is trying to work out how much it is worth and how to get it back here. It is afzelia burr approximately 1m high and 50mm thick. Postage estimated at £150. He's going back tomorrow to negotiate a price and would like some sort of estimate of it's value. Any help would be appreciated ta.

If it's for his own project then all well and good, if he hopes to sell it for a profit then it's a non starter.

Burrs tend to be much more consistent in appearance than different species of timber, consequently (with one or two exceptions like Amboyna) there's no great premium for tropical burrs. I can source all the Oak, Walnut, and Elm burrs I want and they don't look hugely different from the one in your photo, I'd usually pay about £30-50 for a burr of that size if it's wet, maybe £50-70 if it's been air dried for a few years. When I'm back in the workshop tomorrow I can grab some snaps of similarly sized burrs that I've bought along with the price I paid.

I paid £60 for this Oak Burr, it's about the same dimensions as the one your son is looking at.
