    splitting big logs by hand?

Likely you'll break the eye. There are some hybrid axe/splitters listed in old catalogues but I've never seen one in the flesh.

    splitting big logs by hand?

    Yes indeed. Min of 2 wedges. Is it green or dry? Dunno about Oak ... does the bark give any indication of how straight the grain runs? Frugal, did you have to burn the log to retrieve your wedge? ;-}

    Articulated Hollowing Rig

Phillip, I'd be grateful if you could post some more info about your Ikea worklight. Have tried some battery powered cheapie lasers on my Vicmarc rig and they don't come up to scratch.

Quangsheng No.3 Bedrock Pattern Smoothing Plane Review

Thanks; v. instructive. So humour a newbie ... what's the + in a bedrock? Better support for the iron close to the cutting edge?

Can someone quote me for turning 'low knobs' for handplanes?

K, Lee Valley do aftermarket Rosewood knobs for their own planes. Happy to measure one up Adam if you want to compare with Stanley units.

    Nova 1624-44 A Big Disapointment

That's gross, as the kids would say. I've had 3 belt driven lathes and even the cheap Taiwanese job was quieter than that. One thing that I will say about the DVR XP is that electronic failure has only been reported once in webland from memory and the power delivery is great and the driveline...

    Re shaping bowl gouge

A good thing about the Ellsworth Sig gouge is that it comes with instructions on tool presentation which I've not seen with any other turning gouge or chisel. As for getting catches, yeah, it's part of learning any tool. In teaching others bowl turning I've found they get fewer with ground...

Can someone quote me for turning 'low knobs' for handplanes?

G'day Adam. 2nd hand no good? We have 'em down under but not esp cheap. Eg http://www.toolexchange.com.au/OtherPlanes&Parts.htm And somewhere in webland I've come across an online ww tool seller who had new knobs. Prob in the US. Good luck.

    Re shaping bowl gouge

Yeah, an Irish grind can make for a versatile tool. Eg. Ellsworth says his 5/8 Signature gouge is all you need to do a bowl. If you can lay your hands on his DVD you'll find it a useful intro to the range of tool presentations and their uses.

    cutting beads on platters

Henry Taylor beading tools work very well, even on softwood when used with a fresh edge, and come in a range of sizes. They produce a cleaner more regular bead than any other tool/method I've tried. The Hamlet beading tool doesn't perform quite as well but has the plus that it'll do most of...

    Nova 1624-44 A Big Disapointment

I recently bought a DVR XP and QC problems are similar though not as bad: * centres out of alignment both vertically and horizontally, enough to give you oval holes when boring. Horizontal can be adjusted because the tailstock keys are screwed on, not cast. Vert will take shimming. * Tool...

    Carba Tec lathe

Carbatec won't have made it, just badged it. It'll have been assembled in Taiwan or China. You'll prob find several that look like it as the assemblers source look-alike parts from a range of manufacturers, sometimes only on the basis of lowest price. Woodfast do an EVS midi; dunno whether...

To scrape or not to scrape?

The Veritas burnisher raises a somewhat smoother burr than you get off a dry grinder. As you noted re the AWT article, this does a cleaner job on hard end-grain but not as clean as a burr turned up with a diamond hone. The drawback is that you need to lap the scraper top each time to want to...

To scrape or not to scrape?

Just some obvious points about scrapers when used to clean up the inside of a bowl: If you're down to the intended wall thickness, bowl flex prevents you from bringing the scraper all the way to the rim. You'll hear the thrumming start and that's giving you a spiral texture. So you need...

    First Hollow Form

Another tip for a DIY hollow form sander: Cut a bunch of strips of paper; stack and clamp them, drill a hole through the mid-point, thread a bolt through the holes, fan the strips out in a starburst (there should be enough to overlap most of the length) tighten a nut down on the paper and mount...
