    What wood for bookcases

Hi All I've asked this in another place but having browsed for longer, it may be better to ask here. I'm planning to make a wall to wall bookcase which will be painted but I'm not sure what wood to use for the construction. Obviously needs to be cost effective but most important is the shelves...

Help needed with old Sedgwick PT

Hi All I've just bought an old Sedwick planer thicknesser on ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110971741884). It's been converted from three phase to single phase with a 13A 2.2kW motor for the knives and a .5kW motor for the feed roller. It needs a bit of tlc so first I'd like to identify which...

    Housing joint advice required

Hi all I'm planning to build a large built-in book case with several fixed shelves. It will have a number of housing joints at decreasing distances. When I've done this before setting out and clamping router guides was very laborious especially as I didn't have an 18mm router bit and had to make...

    Buying from the classifieds

Hi all I'm considering buying a table saw from someone [1] of this parish. He joined in 2008 and is still a 'newbie' user. He's in Scotland and I'm in Hereford so I'll have to get the saw shipped on a pallet. So how do people feel about sending several hundred pounds to a complete stranger and...

    leg spacing

How far apart should I place my workbench's legs for maximum stability and ridgidity? The top is 2100 x 680 and I was thinking of putting legs 1/4 of the way along the length and almost the full width (less say 50mm for clamping) What say you?

    Plywood

Can anyone tell me what to look for when buying ply. The stuff from my local DIY sheds is terrible and warps as soon as you cut into it. I need to make several strips about 100mm wide and 12mm thick for a newfangled style workbench. Thanks

Bargain Vice - until end Nov 07

I've just bought a Record 52.1/2ED 9" Quick Release vice with Dog for £82.19 inc VAT from toolmix which is a bargain compared with the £157.73 you'd pay at Toolbank. Just thought I'd share that in case anyone else was looking for one?

    Bench Dogs

I'm planning to build a workbench based loosely on the New Fangled one but using 84" T bar clamps instead of pipe clamps. The thing is, I don't know what sort of holes to make in the top for dogs and hold downs. Round or square? Parallel or tapered? funny 'blip' curve? What does the...

Table saw blade - which one?

I've bought a second hand table saw (Makita 2704) but it needs a new blade, and I've discovered there is an overwhelming choice of blades. I'm planning to use it to make some kitchen units initially. What should I look for? Thanks again

    Newbie router table questions

I need to make some architrave to match existing ,so I've bought a Dakota Router table from Rutlands. The surface of the table has a few chips in the surface, some of which have been 'covered up' with a tippex type material. Is this acceptable? The insert isn't flat. On it's own there's a dip...

Hi I'm working more and more with wood but haven't had much experience since school and would like the forum to suggest suitable reading material covering practical advice on the use of table saws, routers and general woodworking please? Thanks

    Router fence question

As this is my first post, let me introduce myself. I'm in the middle of a full time property renovation and already have accumulated a considerable number of tools (mainly hand held saws, planer, router but also decent compound mitre saw) but still find the need for more ( table saw...
