Hi All

I've recently moved to the Monmouth / South Herefordshire area and am looking for advice on where to buy timber. I've found the Timber Centre place in Hereford but to be honest, I wasn't impressed. So werer do you buy yours?
Thanks
Nick

Presumably you are in striking distance of South East Wales, Monmouth, Abergavenny etc.

You may try contacting these: They have a searchable database

These guys are in Caldicot, Gwent.

I strss that I haven't used them for supplies yet but having moved to Wales a while back, I'm slowly building a list of timber sellers.

hope this helps

Thanks for all replies so far.
Pontrilas Sawmill is still going but I haven't been there yet. It doesn't look very 'retail' from their website.

Good Bros are still going although mainly green oak or kiln dried floorboards. Never tried them for KD of other sizes.

You did well to avoid Timber Center. Their oak is cr*p.

Not tried Whitney. I tend to order from Sykes and Whitmores.

We are a bit strapped.

You could, if you have the time and space, get it in waney edge/green/sawn cheap at one of Pughs auctions and then air dry it yourself.

Hi and welcome to a lovely part of the world.

Pontrilas timber are very much going and yes they are retail. They have a very good stock of oak and various softwoods, normally at reasonable prices. If you can open an account you will get better deals. I buy virtually all the softwood I need from them, and also oak, and ask to have a bit of a poke around their stocks before you choose your wood and I've always got a reasonable deal.

As far as I can tell they don't have many other hardwoods, never been to ask to be honest, but they do do mdf and ply.

Now you've moved here you will also be in reasonable reach of Ledbury for the regular Pugh sales, can get some bargains there. http://www.hjpugh.com/

And if you like auctions the regular Nigel Ward http://www.nigel-ward.co.uk/ ones can be fun, very variable and the odd bargain to get hold of. Not so much wood, though some does come up, but my best was a belt sander for £2, the belts that came with it were worth £30 and it's only just given up the ghost.

Apart from that I've got bits and pieces from the timber centre in Hereford, found them friendly if a little pricey.
