wood id please

Hi all, not sure whats wood this is.

I think the tree was probably dead or dying when it was felled as the bark was falling off and I have found traces of wood worm in the items I turned from it

As you can see it turns well and there are some interesting colours in the wood (it smells a bit dungy too)

but I really don't know what it is. any help would be appreciated

Hi,

It looks like Elm to me. Open grain, dark heartwood and lighter sapwood, strong smell when still green.

I agree- Elm- which would also sadly explain why it was dead/disease

Thanks for that at least I know what it is now,got a fair bit to play with. will post some pic's when I get something finished but that won't be for a while, it's soaking wet at the moment so I'll seal them and dry them in the garage for a few months.
