I use a mixture of AVG Free or Comodo (I seem to going down this road more as they do a cracking firewall as weel).

http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage - just stick to the freebie, don't fall for the extra bits & pieces.

Comodo aren't a small outfit. I'd suggest the Comodo one - that way you get the full suite of products and they do behave together.

Used AVG for many years but not any more. Its getting bloated and misses things. I use Kaspersky on my main PC but laptops and media centre PC have Microsoft's own free AV Security Essentials installed. All automatic and no slowing down of the system. fit and forget.

MY thanks added to above as well.

Bullguard are trying to get £40 of me this coming month.
It does have a good response time to email support tho.

AVG for anti virus and zone alarm fire wall for general web use are fine, I have howevr had to go for a full security suit on my childrens lap tops because AVG allowed 3 trojans through from the types of sites they were going on. The full suite seems to have cure the problems after a reinstall that resulted.

AVG has had its day and is a real system resource hog. The current top content is Microsoft Defender which anyone can download free. An when that becomes rubbish I'll start looking again.
