Bought for tenner from the club as "exotic" - no one knows. Floats 1/4" below the surface, so very heavy. Very stripey and an absolute pig to plane, even cross plane. It was part of a job lot bought by the club which included a Hegner lathe. The guy obviously had the wood for a long time - there were several pieces of bubinga 24" x 3" x 3" with Yandles tickets on them for £6.50.

It ties up with Y.B. to an extent, but that is describes as being yellow-brown, varying to brown and dark reddish-brown, with interlocked grain and a moderately fine to medium course grain - this is very coarse and dark red/brown and was probably cut two or three decades ago. I've used sapele and utile over the years and I've not come across anything with such interlocked grain.
