I'm looking to know what is the finish to our mdf formica topped kitchen table. Its very hard and I was thinking of something like this, rather than a veneer edge for mdf beds that i'm going to make for the chidren.

Many thanks for the help.

Sorry if you want to see the pic copy and paste the address (wthout the [/img] ). I seem to be doing what I'm told but cant get it right :?

Its either an oak veneered MDF with lacquer over the whole thing or MF MDF ( melamine faced MDF)

Can you post a close up from the side so that the thickness of the "oak" can be seen? if there is no visible thickmess then its MF MDF, if its the same colour as the grain and 0.5-1.0mm thick its veneered MDF or if the edge is dark almost black then its some form of laminate (formica, Egger Euroform, decamel etc)

LOL Yes Chris

I posted a couple of pics before and they worked alright. Im using Flickr this time ..... trying to blame the website and not myself :D :D

Eric,

The edges are just MDF which has been finished with a lacquer. If done commercially it was most likely an acid-catylist lacquer which is available only through specialist wood finishing suppliers. A polyurethene varnish from B&Q would do the job, though.

Just be prepared to give it quite a few coats with a good sand in between each as MDF soaks up lacquer like blotting paper.
