When turning a platter, is there any rule that i need to follow about whether the pith side is the top or the bottom of the finished item?

The pith is not present, but i am struggling to find a picture with the likely effects of doing either. It is ash, and looks quite tightly grained from the end grain.

thanks. I was hoping to get an idea of what each would look like, grain wide. I will just have to have a play and see!

Thanks Greg. I thought so too, but the one that I found on his site wasnt the one that I remembered.

On a bowl heart side up will give you less grain pattern as the curve will be following the annual rings, heart side down you'd be cutting through them, giving more - but i don't think it would make that much difference on a platter.

i saw that, but it doesnt show the dfference between the bowls on page 2, and the same bowl upside down.
