Hi All

I am in Orlando for a work conference next week and may get a bit of spare time for a wander about. Don't fancy the Disney stuff so wondered if there are any good tool shops out there?

Why not, Downtown Disney has a sports shop where the workshop has a public viewing area. You can watch them turn baseball bats.

There are some. I bought some stuff there (in this hardware store, IIRC) in the 1980s. We were there again about five years ago as a family, so I couldn't really go looking then.

Florida Mall is *huge*, but doesn't (didn't) have any tool shops in it (the girls loved it tho' lots of fashion outlets).

Sears have good tools though the ones in more rural communities have bigger tool sections. I've got a ratchet screwdriver handle from them which gets a lot of use, and I've bought other stuff in the past. I'm not ashamed of going into Wal-Mart either (you have to visit the gun counter, just for the experience!). A lot of their stuff is really cheap+nasty, but they occasionally have good brands.

There are good on-line resources for Orlando and Kissimmee, their equivalent of Yell etc. You might find specialists listed. IIRC, there's at least one really big tool store in Tampa if you can get that far over (about 1.5 hours each way, depending on traffic).

Harbour Freight are in both Tampa and Orlando, but I only know them by reputation.

There are quite a few tool dealers here.

Be aware that the conference center area is mainly International Drive and Kissimmee (down near Disney), which is away from most residential areas and thus away from useful tool shops, etc.

HTH, etc.

There's a Lowes

LOWE'S OF S.E. ORLANDO, FL

* Store Number: 1598
* (5 Miles)
* 3500 SOUTH SEMORAN BOULEVARD
* ORLANDO, FL 32822

More an all in B&Q but better - when I was there some 12 years back the kids went off to buy trainers etc somewhere and I had a morning at Lows. Bought a set of chisels -still in use and a chainsaw sharpening jig

Thanks for the suggestions. Might wait until my next trip to New England, more woody stuff there.

When I was in NY the best I could find was a Home Depot but they had the bosch palm colt router for £70 well worth popping in the case. As it was I already had a domino in mine so no more room.

The other thing Gareth is that you would have to hire a car and find these places? :)

What I've done in the past is order things beforehand and had them delivered to the hotel/villa whatever. But a bit late now for you.

Chems - what about "Tools for Working Wood" in Brooklyn? :) Though the area around it is a bit intimidating?

I always have a car in the US, can't stand waiting for cabs or other people to ferry me about. Prefer the independance. Have given up on Florida tool shops for this trip. I mostly am in Boston and lot of shops about there.

Thanks for the help so far.

I'm going to florida next week, would it be wise to buy some festool power tools? Any thing I should know? Tax? Compatibility?

We stayed at Orleans riverside Disney Xmas 2010 I planned to go tool shopping but never did. The only place I spotted was the lowes mentioned above but as I was there with my family I didn't bother looking in there.

+1 for lowes ,brought back bosch cordless multi tool at the time 2007 and was about £100 at the exch rate then also a makita 14 volt drill driver for £90 and it was £199 in screwfix at the time,the main thing to be aware of is i think unless items have the ce mark there is no warranty in the uk.

There's a Woodcraft store in the area:
http://www.woodcraft.com/stores/store.aspx?id=314
I've never been to Florida so haven't visited this one, but most Woodcrafts have a pretty good tool selection. Prices should be as on the website. Sales tax will probably be in the 6% range. They should have Festool.

Lowes and Home Depot are big box building supply stores. They will have some tools and what they have will be cheaper than Woodcraft. Don't expect to find Festool there, but they should carry Dewalt, Milwaukee, and other decent brands of handheld power tools.
