Hi all, I am doing a little project for my good wife and am useing some maple. I had a piece 1500 by 170 by 60mm and thought I'd cut it in half giveing me two planks about 25mm thick once planed. I planed and thicknessed and then put it through the bandsaw. Near the end of the cut there was loud pop and bothe pieces bowed.

In the middle their must be a good 10mm gap, My question is, is this normal or was I just unlucky. The timber is very well seasoned.

Normal.
Always a bad idea to plane before cutting to length.
Nearly always a bad idea to plane first and then rip as you just have to plane again, having already lost some thickness.
So cut to length and rip first, then plane.
Starting with 60mm thickness you could expect to get 2 boards sawn at under 30 (unlikely to be identical) which when planed would at best be 24 ish but could be much less.

Lesson learnt. I'd already cut to this length from a 3m length and left 50mm for snipe and bodge. I'm going to end up with 20mm boards :(
