Just starting to get to grips with making a few bits and would like to start doing abit of inlay work. So am lookin for a couple of timbers that contrast each other? And also where abouts I could purchase them in small quantities around east yorkshire

There is somerscales in immingham if you are over the river. But for inlaying it sounds like you want a lot less than full boards. I would have a look at either a turning supplier and cut down turning blanks, spindle blanks or even pen blanks. Or probably eBay. If you were to buy a mixed lot of veneer off cuts, you could take your choice. Then just have a light and a dark board to trim a bit off as you see fit.

Look at devonwoody's tissue box threads- he often puts different timbers together, albeit not inlaid, to good effect. Black walnut and maple are classics, but sapele and maple would work, as indeed would many others.

Generally speaking most inlay or Marquetry work is done using contrasting dark and light woods like ebony and walnut or teak/sapele and sycamore or birch. most woods can be bought as vaneer sheets or if you have an accurate band saw they can be cut from planks.

Thanks for the advice guys, not just looking for inlay timber although that is something I want to do. I just want to make small projects to start with boxes Etc and wasn't eating to spend 100s on full boards etc? I'd like a selection of different woods to experience with but now lots of it if you know what I mean lol. Probably what everyone wants I suppose. Have to look into buyin a selection
