Hi guys

Bought the above bandsaw off a rather dodgy member of this forum, It has a rather quirky electronic brake which can be manually turned on/off with a turn switch, i believe this to be be some sort of electromagnetic brake the fits in the motor somehow. i'm guessing it was added by Strartrite to bring the saw up to current regs?

It worked fine the handful of times I have used it. But recently come to use it and having switched it on it would seem the motor has seized completely. The saw will try and start up but has no joy.

We have just had a rather cold spell could this have had something to do with it? I have opened the saw door and had a look everything looks fine but the motor spindle just wont turn.

Any ideas much appreciated guys love to get this saw going again.

Cheers

If you get a humming sound when you push the ON switch but nothing turns, its almost certainly the capacitor on the motor. look for a white plastic tube shaped can (sometimes black) normally inside the connection housing, sometimes on top of the motor.
An electromagnetic brake usually crosses the motor windings to try to make the motor turn backwards. it would be unlikley to be that at fault.

Theres 2 wires going to the brake can you/have you a meter to test whether theres voltage there when you operate the switch to take the brake off.
Its sometimes dc sometimes ac
If there’s voltage there then its a new coil for the brake
If you dont need the brake for legal reasons the cheapest way is to remove the brake

Dont know enough about braked motors to give further advice.
have you removed the belt to prove that it is the motor not turning, rather than a problem on the wheels?

How long has it stood without use, has it been subject to condensation?

As already mentioned if power is getting to the brake mechanism it might be that it has just seized due to mild corrosion, if that's the case I suspect it's a case of removing motor and inspecting the innards.
Then as already suggested checking brake mechanism for operation and making a decision as to whether it's good to go after servicing or to remove it if not essential.

Just a thought and worth eliminating are there any switches on the door if so give them a good clean or blow them out with a air hose .

When you operate the switch that turns the brake on or off can you hear a clunking sound as the
brake engages or releases or is their a buzzing sound ?
A buzzing would indicate the brake is stuck !
No sound at all would suggest electronics.

Have sorted this now, was a case of RTFM under the motor cooling fan cover is a small bolt that just needs adjusting a very small amount.

Cheers
