Has anyone used or picked up a Record 4-1/2 smoother or compared them to the Stanley 4-1/2s?

Hi,

I have an old Record 4 1/2 its a stayset with rosewood handles and a newish Stanley that had plastic handles, the Stanley weighs 300g more than the Record, both work well after tuning. I have the Record setup for fine finishing and the Stanley set for hogging lots off, so get one of each the older the better.

Just say away from the ones made around years 38-45 because they have a design fault ( on the Stanleys at lest ).
You will know by the part go's over the adjustment wheel is made in two bit, insted of one.
All of mine ( bench planes ) are of the low nob type Stanley

Hmmm

Do you think I'll be okay with either of these?

I'm hoping so because they're costing me a pretty penny to have them shipped to the States.

They both look very good buys, you should ok with both :)
For anything else you might need to do with them ( fettling or blades, do a search ) :)
