Again, true DW but with one caveat, it was Mac brown who weakened the regulation of the banks that they then took advantage of.
Socialists seem to believe in people being good natured and honest, but greed is as rampant in the banking industry as in Man United.

Roy.

yeah but banks went down all overthe world , not just in the uk - look at the mess the american banks got into for example. So it would have happened regulation or no, dereglation just made it easier for banker to pineapple up

I'm not saying that brown and co did a good job, but we're kidding ourselves to think that cameron et al would have done any better - after all deregulation of banking is a right wing policy not a left wing one, - all blair/brown knew about socialism was as a word in the dictionary between dung and syphilis

course the torries say now that they wouldnt have deregulated, but then hindsight is a wonderful thing

Maybe but it was El Gordo who gave them free rein...taken from a paper of the time....

In a television interview being broadcast tonight, Mr Brown concedes that he bowed to pressure from the City to regulate the banks more lightly than he should have. “In the Nineties, the banks all came to us and said, Look, we don't want to be regulated, we want to be free of regulation.' And, actually... we should have been regulating them more. So I've learnt from that.”

I still reckon the ones that should pay all of the debt are those that benefitted and caused the collapse of banking.

Therefore banks, bankers and borrowers.

I don't believe the Goverment(s) have a say in the fanancial world,just ask Terry@Tesco's £££££$$$$$$.
Or ask mr Obama (the most powerful man in the world!) if he got "owned" off a certain BP £££££$$$$$$...........

Re sukuk stuff - it's called pragmatism and if the people who exhibit pragmatism are English it is generally regarded with a smug warmth because we are so good at it.

Breaking News!
Manchester brothels are tonight celebrating the end of the recession, having sealed an additional five year contract with a local businessman.

I wasnt condeming the practice, merely pointing out that it happens

I'd say a little more than that. Interesting how a thread on Public Sector cuts has deviated perhaps not so unexpected.

As for the point - it's already been made.

Indeed, how do we get from cuts to this. What is the point of these repetitive arguments. Haven't the Daily Mail got a forum for this kind of rubbish

Guys, you're lucky enough to be allowed to discuss politics and spending cuts, so just do that.
