Yes. Sykpe to Skype is free. Skype to a landline or mobile is chargeable, but not bad value, particularly compared to having to buy a local SIM card if you are abroad or using your UK mobile when abroad.
 
it's good because you can use a decent microphone and camera, which can improve call quality considerably, I wish more people would use skype.
 
it will come. we are using Skype for Business at work now. No desk phones at all, and the call quality is excellent. makes no difference if I am at home, in the office or elsewhere. if I have my laptop and headset/headphones nobody would be any the wiser.

TBH, if you're contacting a mobile I'd expect them to have the Skype app and be using WiFi anyway...

I tried Skyping my wife on her tablet the other month, actually... I havea 16MP camera and decent mic on the phone, but it was all reduced to utter gash because our internet is so slow.

We don't use Skype at work for the same reason, although that one is purely because we've so much data, so many servers and at least 5,000 users on the network at any given time!!
