Should there be a hole?

I just bought some Liberon Beeswax (clear) from Axminster and there is a small hole right in the centre of the lid. It looks like it was put there deliberately so I'm not sure if it is there by design or whether the tin should be air tight (as I expected).

Clearly I'm not an expert on finishing, hence the query!

Thanks,
Paul.

Yes it should be there as the few tins I have also have the hole. I would have to guess it is to stop the lid blowing off if it gets warm and the solvents evaporate.

There's holes in my tins Paul. Not sure why they do it though.

Along similar lines I noticed that there used to be a hole in black shoe polish tin lids. I was told that if you covered the hole with sellotape that the polish would remain useable for much longer i.e it would not dry and break up.

Having tried it it seems to work. If I was a cynical person I would say that the manufacturer puts the hole there to shorten the life of the product :D

I wonder what the real reason is - suspect it may be as Alan suggests

Cheers :D

Good news - at least I don't have a product that needs to be returned!

Thanks to one and all for the very prompt responses.

Paul.
