I've made a boo-boo in restoring a nice old Stanley Bailey No. 4 and scratched (light/medium depth, using wire wool) the chrome on the lever cap while trying to remove a spot stain caused by a fossilised bead of blood/sweat/etc.

Should I try Autosol on a buffing wheel? Ignore it and carry on regardless?

What does the panel recommend?

Cheers, W2S

1) Don't stress, it's not important enough;
2) Try buffing if you want - it can't be too different to what the electroplaters do.

Cheers, Vann.

chrome thickness layers are measured in microns of an inch, the scratches are at least half way through already. start serious buffing and the chrome will be gone.

Now you can use the cap as a screwdriver to unscrew the cap iron.

I know that will upset some people but it works fine.

Pete
