I have an old cheap 1/4" router, which has broken.

Of course I have 1/4" router bits for this.

I have bought a 1/2" router (Dewalt 625ES) and I whilst any new router bits I buy will be 1/2" ones, I would like to be able to use my 1/4" bits.

I understand you can get a collet for this, but Dewalt want £20 would this part be unique to Dewalt or would any 1/4" collet work?

I'm surprised it didn't come with 1/4" and 1/2" collets - mine came with both. I'd buy a spare nut as well - it's a bit of a faff separating the collet from the nut, so best to keep a nut on each.

Cheers

I bought it secondhand from a chippie who has developed epilepsy and therefore is considered a health & safety risk on a building site so no longer works, it is well used but with no box or extra bits.
