Unless you have good provenience, it is notoriously difficult to ID a burr.

For example, Mallee burr is just one of 700 known species of Eucalyptus, and that is just one type of tree.

So unless you have access to tree DNA where you may identify it I would give up trying.

Next time you get hold of some Burr write what it is on it in black marker, it's what I do.

This is Mallee Burr from Australia in the same pen as yours.

This is Myrtle from the west coast of the USA.

This is also Myrtle from the same place,,,,,See the problem, even from the same place?

This was just labeled Eucalyptus.

So you can see where the difficulty lies.

If you make a pen with unknown wood it just has to labeled "Unknown wood, believed to be (#+';;:%&* ) or something.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

The timber In question was brought To me by a guy that requested a pen to be made for him so it was a Shot in the dark As To what it is looking at your array of burrs put on the forum i have turned them all sucessfully into pens myself of which i can confess are very good but this rouge timber is one that i have not got in my collection that i can match it to for this purpose i have presented it before you hoping for identification for my own purpose so i can then add it to my collection labeled as to the correct timber the pen in question was sold as soon as it was turned it didn't have time to cool down off the lathe as he was eagerly awaiting for it i shall label it as timber unknown until i'm certain of what it is thank you all for your comments and help also for showing such splendid examples of pens of such high quality
