Hello,

I'm trying to remove my upper wheel of my bandsaw and it looks like the spindle is fairly rusty.. I've tried using pullers, but it only nudged a few mm's before a small fragmant of wheel broke off.. That is't an issue for me but now I'm not sure what to try.

Any ideas?

Push the wheel back on. clean off all the rust you can get to. apply a good pentrating fluid such as plus gas (not the dreaded WD40!) and leave to soak.
Spread the load from your puller legs with some wood or similar shaped if necessary to prevent taking chunks out of the castings and try again.

Hi

In addition to Myfordman's suggestions get some localised heating onto the hub as you pull it off, a paint stripping heat gun with a fine nozzle is ideal, (keep the heat away from the spindle as best you can).

Regards Mick

Great stuff! I had already tried a quick squirt of WD 40 but surprise surprise nothing happened haha. I'll get a hold of some plus gas and try.

The heats a good idea although I doubt I'll be able to localize the heat away from the spindle as it isn't that big! I'll use some blocks of wood too and see if it budges! Fingers crossed.

If all else fails, and you run out of ideas then I would suggest removing the whole spindle and knocking the spindle through the wheel with a hammer and a punch.
