Last night I compared prices of a couple of Record Power bandsaws. All their dealers that I looked at had exactly the same price as the Record Power site i.e the summer promotion price.

Do they have similar pricing restrictions to companies like Festool or am I just not looking in the right places for a deal?

I work at a company that sell their products.

It has been made quite clear to us that the prices are only the suggested retail price. What we do to cut our own noses is our own affair.

I'm sure if you contacted any of those distributors they would do you a deal for a good spend. Maybe just unfortunate that all of the ones you have looked at are just going by the book price.

Hope this helps

I was looking at scroll saws and most of them were one and the same machine, just different colours or a knob instead of a lever and I think this is the same with a lot of machines. Most are imported from the far east and most are not worth a carrot. I think all machines and tools from Record are now imported, firms like Sorby have been bought out by the Chinese. To get a decent piece of kit these days you have to lay out a shedful of money.

I think you will find that when a major company runs a national promotion the dealers that take part do so on a lower margin and there is little room for them to give further discount.

Thats just the trouble Geoff. We the customers have demanded ever cheaper prices which can only be met by reducing quality and outsourcing production to the cheapest bidder. I suppose some of this comes down to reducing prices to get into the DIY market which is HUGE!!

Like you say, if you want a quality piece of kit then you need to pay the money these days.

I believe record powers higher end stuff is still made in the UK, but believe you are correct that their cheaper tools are made in China. However, with their 5 year warranty they must believe they are made to a good spec.

There is a lots of rubbish coming out of china, but they are certainly capable of some great engineering too. Take the Quangsheng planes that Matthew sells over at workshopheaven. He gets them made to his specifications and are a very good product. Trouble is, as they get better and the middle classes expand in China, their prices will have to go up, but that will be good news for British manufacturing as we will become competitive again. It always goes full circle, you just need to be in it for the ride.
