In my experience the item attached to the negative lead only ever de-rusts, it has never 'dissolved'. The item on the positive lead goes into solution and as said above, if it is stainless steel it produces chromium compounds which are nasty to say the least.

I've had car components undergoing the process for weeks - nothing wrong with my memory :oops: - with no detrimental effect.
