I mentioned last week that I'd been playing with captive rings. Here is my first proper attempt at producing something. Just made out of a scrap of softwood. The rings are different sizes and the two ends are slightly different shapes. Was still fun to make though. Swmbo also wants two more made for new babies (not my babies thank god). The new ones will be made from sycamore though.

Nice one, dj. I've never managed more than one captive ring so far! I've always used field maple for these, but presumably any of the bigger Acer species such as sycamore are clean grained and non-toxic.
 
Boxwood is ideal for rattles - it is so hard that it makes a better rattle noise than most timbers. It also makes for less fragile captive rings too!

I think I read that hornbeam is the only 'recommended' timber for babies rattles (toxicity / strength etc).

Not sure why but may be worth considering.
