I do have an Airace half mask that I wear when I am using equipment, but if there s a small 'pocket' type mask that could be just popped on for general use to help clear the air polution around when doing other things, or when visiting someone elses shop, which would it be?

A good fit is important and as high a filtration as possible. This may not be available, but if it is, then a few of those could be useful on occassions.
Thanks

Have a look on ebay. There's quite a selection of the smaller types - obviously don't get the real cheapo ones. I rely on my extractor for most of the dust but also wear one of the smaller ones when doing dusty work like hand sanding. The one I have at the moment is labelled 8030V CE0194 EN149:2001 FFP3. I've no idea how effective it is because you can't see the fine dust - I guess the EN number gives the spec. I don't cough so that may be some indication.

The 'FFP3' part gives the spec. - the EN number is just the standard by which that spec is described.

In general, if you're buying a respirator for use against dust, a P3 is better than a FFP3 is better than a P-anything-lower-than-3. If you're buying a respirator for use against organic solvents found in paints and thinners and so on, then replace 'P' with 'A'. The higher the number the higher the percentage of bad stuff the respirator filters out, and in the case of the FF variety, the lower the leakage around the sides.

I don't have a recommendation for the OP, other than to be aware that he's probably looking at disposable filters if he wants something that fits in his pocketses. I don't use them myself 'cause I tried a couple a long while ago and they were both crap, but that was more for organics than dust.
