Hello all.

i'm a bit stumped over which budget planer/thicknesser to go for.

From a bit of googling I gather that the Titan model Screwfix knock out for £180...

(unable to post links for some reason!)

... isn't a bad machine for the money but is rather letdown by having a very flimsy fence.

The Charnwood version* is £90 more at £270, but from the pictures appears to have a sturdier looking fence. I was hoping someone here has experience of using either/both machines can offer a bit of insight into whether bunging the extra £90 is worth it for the better looking fence.

*I'm assuming that the actual guts of both machines are very alike.

Thanks.

I had one of those cheap Screwfix PTs, it was absolutely rubbish. In common with the other clones, the planer tables have no adjustment for alignment and you would do better to find an older better quality machine on fleabay. I replaced with a new Record PT260 which, although I can't get rid of snipe, is far better.

P.S. Forgot to mention that Screwfix don't have spare parts so once the 12 months warranty is up, just bin fodder.
