Hello,

I'm new to the forum and just in the process of setting up a workshop at home. I'm currently looking for a second hand Meddings pillar drill but can't decide between the Driltru or M4 models. Both are well regarded by people and I know the Driltru started production about 10 years after the M4's but they both then carried on in production together for a good few decades afterwards.

Despite much searching online I can't seem to find any direct comparisons of the two drills and opinions on which would be the better model to buy (and more precise if there is a difference).

Assuming the two models were in a similar condition what are peoples thoughts as to which is the better drill to buy?

Many Thanks
Andy

i dont know the 2 machines, but I doubt that you would be disappointed with either.

If absolutely everything was equal, the driltru probably has better spares availability depending on which model http://www.meddings.co.uk/spare-parts/m ... ring-list/ but i would go with the better condition of the two or more convenient location.

I have a driltru in pieces, undergoing refurb and it is a solid bit of kit.

I have the MF4 Mk3 which is an awesome machine. Can drill continuously all day through anything. Super accurate with no discernible runout, and has the advantage a MT2 mounting enabling almost anything to be slotted in. It has a gear box that gives a range of speeds when coupled with the belt and pulley system that creates an incredible range of speeds that doesn't require IMO the use of an inverter to attain infinite speed control.

There are two versions, one with the 550W motor and a MT2 taper and the ither with a 750W motor and a MT3 motor.

You can still get some spares from Meddings, but not everything.

Hi Andy
I have a Meddings Driltru and am delighted with it. Bloody heavy solid machine and very accurate. The only downside I find is that the heavy table has to be adjusted by hand and I would prefer it was geared wind up type.

cheers

Hi Guys,

Many thanks for your replies and input. Loks like I shouldn't go wrong with either as long as I get one in decent condition.
