Hi Help required

What is the preferable wood for making wedges and glue blocks when building oak stairs, hard wood or soft wood?
And what glue for them pva, pu or any other?
Many thanks in advance

Steve

I have always used softwood wedges, because they will squash a bit. Glue blocks are whatever is going but usually softwood and pva glue (Titebond for me).

Of my stairs are anything to go by whatever they swept up went in but to be fair they don't squeak and are at least 50 years old. Personally I use offcuts from whatever I've just made them from with PVA.

The wedges come from the offcuts of the job. I get my glue blocks out of 75mm redwood, rip into long arris rails and leave them alone for a few months, then plane up square when needed.
