Miles away - totally impractical...
I need a nut for the bolt that holds the pedal on my Axminster mobile base. The instructions say that it is a 5/16 18 (with the nylon insert). Want to order one with some other stuff from either Axminster or Screwfix, however, I can only find metric sizes. Would I be correct in saying that an M8 is a direct equivalent?

Cheers

No. M8 has a pitch of 1.25mm which would give a tpi of just over 20, you most likely need a 5/16 UNC nut although Whitworth does have the same tpi.

Try these people http://www.namrick.co.uk/ just a bit pricy on postage for a 9p nut

Nothing so simple - you need to know the thread type as well as the size - things measured in imperial measurements are often imperial threads e.g. UNF (Unified National Fine)
Metric sizes are metric thread type as well (M8 = Metric thread,8mm)

Possible (but unlikely) other thread types :-
UNC
BSP
BSW
NPT

Have fun

Andrew

You can rule out BSP and NPS as 5/16 is not a standard size nor is 18tpi and UNF at that diameter has a pitch of 24

UNC is the most likely as I said whitworth would be unlikely but having said, that some of the imported stuff from china has quite coarse threads.

Probably easier to replace the bolt as well as the nut with M8 :D

Yeah, I thought of doing that too. Does screwfix supply 100mm bolts? Nope... I think I'm going to have to solve this one via my local(ish) screw and bolt specialist.

Thanks for all the advice.

M8 studding and two nuts from SF, must still be cheaper than the petrol.

matt, why don't you just give Axminster a bell, explain what base it is from, and i am sure that you will have it within 24 hours, and if you are a regular customer i will be surprised if they even charge you for it.
After all if it is their base, there is a good chance that they can check right away what size it is.

Good luck

Mike

Did anyone hear about the family laundry business run by the Nutt family where the son got a bit out of order with two of the female employees and then legged it?
The local paper headline read:

NUTTS SCREWS WASHERS & BOLTS

Off topic I know so I'll just get me coat......

Pity you lost the Thread there Martin, your Sentence will will be completed shortly no doubt, just hope you don't Die in the Stocks.
The fear of that Tap on the shoulder tapers off near the end.

Sorry, been one of those days with too much free time.

I'll second that, he keeps plugging away

Yes seems to be Mahking hard work of it, guess he has run short of Tallow with all that slippery slope stuff going on down in that part of the world.

From someone who hopes to be in Bridport somewhere about lunch time tomorrow.

Your showing your age there with tallow.

Couldn't you think of a way to incorporate Trefolex or Rocal RTD into a sentence
