Hi,

Apologies if this has been posted before, had a quick look and couldn't see anything. Feel free to point me in the right direction if I missed it.

I've got ZERO woodwork experience. But, I'd like that to change.

Not for any particular reason but I think I'd enjoy it. A mix of projects at home and simple furniture etc I'd imagine.

Anyway, having zero experience I'm not really sure where to start.

I've been looking out for beginner classes / course in the Leeds area.

Wondered if something formal over at the building college might be a good start point to get my ball rolling And make sure I know one end of a saw from the other?

Any thoughts / tips / local knowledge?

Cheers

Hmmm can't help you with the courses, but as a woodworking newbie myself (less than 2 years exp) I can offer you the following (possibly useless!) advice...

Have a think about what you'd like to make, pick one, say a table, cabinet, bandsaw box, whatever, they'll be countless decent wood working videos on YouTube showing a way to do it. I can give you a list of YouTube channels if you're interested.

Once you get stuck in and start making something you have another wonderful resource, this place!

There are many wonderful, knowledgeable and generous people here willing to share their immense experience and wisdom to help you through a project.

I don't know much but the little I know is almost entirely from this place and YouTube.

I thoroughly recommend getting lessons from somewhere. Learn the good habits from day one (and not the bad habits that YouTube is full of) You will also get good guidance on the tools you will actually require for the projects you wanting to complete.

I see that you are Leeds based - Is Chris Tribe from up that way?

You might look at courses and think that they are a lot of money - however, from what I have found, they are great because you can make mistakes in an environment where you will have an instructor that shows you what went wrong, why it went wrong, what you can do to avoid making the mistake in future and (the bit I really like) the hints and tips from the trade to get you out of jail when it has gone all Pete Tong.

You won't do better than to go on a course with Chris Tribe who has a teaching workshop at Ilkley, which is in your neck of the woods. His book is also highly recommended btw as I reviewed it for him a couple of years ago. His advanced chair making course was one that I was interested in but couldn't unfortunately do; he's also a really nice bloke - Rob

I've only been doing it three years, you will learn a lot here, especially if you post questions and projects you're working on and are unsure what to do next, there's always more to learn with woodworking.
