175 pieces cut out and a few more to go. 20 hours over 4 days to cut them out on the scroll saw. Can’t believe it took that long. Lost count of how many blades I went through. Enjoyed doing it though on my new second hand saw. Got a Hegner with the quick release. What a difference to the old ferm saw I had. Love it. I have been looking forwards to doing this pattern since I first saw a picture of it.

It’s called the guardian dragon from an old scroll saw magazine. I don’t have the red, yellow and green wood so I will be staining it to achieve those colours. Managed to get some western red cedar and tulip wood for it as well.

I saw one dragon done and the wood he used was white wood with a lovely brown ripple going through it. I haven’t a clue what that wood is but it looked gorgeous.

Got to check my fit and lots of sanding and shaping to do. Don’t know how long it’s gonna take but there’s no rush. :D

Got a bit more work done on the dragon. There’s that many pieces to it and some are tiny. Very fiddly in places. As I said earlier I haven’t got the coloured wood for the body so using pine wood and acrylic paint. Hope it works out ok. Here’s a few photos of the progress so far.

Lots of small pieces in the head.

Long way to go yet but enjoying it. Going to mute down the colours as well as they are too bright, especially the yellow.

I'd love to do something like that, but not a lot more practice first.

The dragon is progressing nicely. All glued together now and painted. I have to add the backing board and a little more fine sanding to do and then I will apply the finish.

I am going to try some spray on lacquer I got from wilko. It’s supposed to be none yellowing.
I’ve been trying a few different finishes on other projects but still not found a finish I’m happy with yet.

A lot of the varnish I have used makes the white wood a horrible yellow colour.
What finish do you use on your intarsia?

Here’s a photo of the dragon unfinished.
