Telephoned the local council planning department and asked if needed planning permission to allow parking of three motor vehicles on our own drive. They wanted £60 up front to send me a form and then they would let me know if I needed to apply for planning permission.

They would not state if it was a requirement to apply for planning permission for this sort of thing without paying the £60 up front.

Does this mean £60 is now a mandatory charge then come planning application charges?

They did state if I started to allow parking of three cars someone (a busybody their words) was bound to come along to them with some information. (perhaps they ought to be charged £60 as well  )

Any experience around here on the parking situation. (we have a street full of overnight parkers without parking space), I could most probably get five cars in at how much a week do you think?

In fact I think they might be better off getting a new telephone number commencing 0900something at a £ 5 per minute.

It's alright, just park the cars, then if the planing dept try to contact you, charge them £60 then tell them you'll think about talking to them.

Unless one of the vehicles is poking out onto the pavement, I can't see a problem. Just park what you want on there. It's your drive. Unless I'm missing something, I can't see what basis anyone would have to make a complaint.

You don't need planning permission to park on your drive but having raised the issue with the council you might have opened up a can of worms if you mentioned you were running it as a business?

+1 for the above, assuming you have a dropped pavement, i.e. legal access, jfdi.

As to an above post - we used to be able to drop in and ask questions, but I tried to sort some planning permission out for my b.i.l. , and I was told the "facility no longer exists", and he should pay for an outline planning application.

Hi

Are they your vehicles or do you intend to rent parking space on your property?

Your vehicles - unless your deeds state otherwise I'd just get on and do it.

Renting out - different story :(

Yes its the different story they would not be mine, (My savings interests rates are so low, my private pension went bust etc. etc. so thinking of some income if possible)
Some properties in our road have 5 + motor vehicles and only space to park one car, one fellah uses two neighbours properties to park his lot with us pensioners.

And I have got around 50 sq.mtrs. already of paved area to my car drive plus a double garage.

Hmm

If it were me I'd forget the council, get regular customer(s), and cash up front, (no accounts).

Also think about a damage waiver to be accepted by the vehicle owner with regard to damage occurring whilst the car is on your property.

Keep it all low key and who's to know.

Regards Mick

I think a lot of people do it around the country especially ones near Railway Stations where parking is difficult and very expensive - it can command quite high fees?

Rod

The council do it, car parks, even charge you at meters on the road.

Perhaps they don't want competition or competitive rates or perhaps want a cut.

Hi

Or maybe you would be turning your property into a place of business which would attract different Council tax or rates

Regards Mick

Thanks powertools, that only one parking space without permission was a bit of a blow, but there are one or two motorcaravan owners around and they have had to park in front of their living room windows so I could pull one of them I would think. (and they would use the space of two cars)

John, Take a look here for 'market rates' in your area. http://www.parkatmyhouse.com/
Some will show long term rates as well as daily rates.

I don't suggest you use there service but come to a cash agreement with the owner and insist on a set of keys if you have to move the vehicles for any reason. You can then dump it on the road if they don't pay up.

Incidentally it is a great service for parking near a station for day trips etc.
